Interview with Catherine McNeur
With little to no sanitation system and wild animals roaming the streets, Manhattan in the first half of the 19th century was far from the urban metropolis we know today. In her book, Taming Manhattan: Environmental Battles in the Antebellum City, historian Catherine McNeur details life in Manhattan between 1815 and 1865, and the struggles that ensued in the effort to urbanize the city.
