Taft as president is popular, but is a disappointment to Roosevelt for not carrying out the Progressive reforms as he would. Roosevelt determined to run under the Republican ticket, even though warned by closest advisors not to. Primaries indicated Republicans wanted change to Roosevelt, but Party convention gave delegates to Taft. Roosevelt pulls out and forms his own political party.
