SoCal Update

On the Feb. 25 episode of SoCal Update, many freelancers in California say they have been left out of COVID-related unemployment aid. KPCC Reporter David Wagner discusses why this is happening.

Despite the promise of help, many creative workers are falling through the cracks in the state’s unemployment system. The problem is, if you have even a small amount of W2 wages in your work history, California’s unemployment department will only use that to calculate your benefits. This is a big deal for many actors, musicians and makeup artists. In some cases, they’re getting just a tenth of what they would’ve received if their past income had been considered in full.
