The War
Daniel Inouye and the Surrendering Soldier
Clearing a farmhouse in combat, Daniel Inouye found a German soldier trying to surrender. When the man suddenly reached into his jacket, Inouye struck him with the butt of his rifle, only to see that he had been reaching for photographs of his wife and children. The experience was so painful that Inouye sought out the chaplain.
