A Divine Pairing of Hopkins and Pryce in ‘The Two Popes’ at the KCET Cinema Series
Fernando Meirelles is a prominent international film director who was born in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2004, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his film "City of God," which was released in the U.S. by Miramax Films. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director Award in 2005 for "The Constant Gardener."
In the 1980s, Meirelles studied at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of São Paulo. While studying architecture, his interests led him to experimental filmmaking. He worked for many years directing independent television, and eventually became an accomplished director of commercials. Today he is still one of the partners of O2 Filmes Production Company, the largest advertising agency in Brazil, which produced his film "City of God."
Screenwriter Anthony McCarten is a three-time Oscar-nominated and double BAFTA-winning screenwriter and producer of "The Theory Of Everything" and "Darkest Hour." His film "Bohemian Rhapsody" became the biggest grossing biopic in history, earning over $900 million at the box office, and winning the 2019 Golden Globe for Best Picture, and a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Picture. He is also a celebrated author of seven novels, and in 2015 he was inducted as a Literary Fellow in the New Zealand Society of Authors.
