KCET Wins Eight National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards Presented by the Los Angeles Press Club

Honors come after 15 nominations across 14 categories for ARTBOUND and SOUTHLAND SESSIONS series.

Los Angeles, Calif. – Feb. 18, 2022 – KCET, showcasing the best of PBS while being the leading source for arts, culture and news in Southern California, announced today that two of its KCET Original series were honored with eight first-place awards by the LA Press Club at the annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards. It was previously announced that KCET received 15 nominations in 14 categories for the locally produced, award-winning arts and culture series ARTBOUND and SOUTHLAND SESSIONS. The 14th annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards were presented virtually on Thurs., Feb. 17 in a ceremony that viewers can watch here.

The ARTBOUND episode “Watts Towers Arts Center” won first-place recognition in the Diversity in the Entertainment Industry category for the documentary film that examined the Watts Towers Arts Center founded by artists and educators in the 1960s that has been a beacon of art and culture in the community for decades. Additionally, the ARTBOUND special “Arts Education” developed with LA County Department of Arts and Culture took top honors in the News category exploring the values that arts education provides for all young people and communities. ARTBOUND also won awards in the Hard News Feature (over 5 min.), Personality Profile, Soft News Feature (over 5 min.) and Soft News Feature (Arts and Culture/Under 5 min.) categories.

SOUTHLAND SESSIONS took home two first place honors in the categories of Film Feature and Other Fine Arts Feature.

In addition to its eight wins for ARTBOUND and SOUTHLAND SESSIONS, KCET received two second-place recognitions in the Pandemic Reporting (Entertainment) and Documentary or Special Program categories as well as two third-place honors in the Humor Writing and Personality Profile categories.

Diversity in the Entertainment Industry, Broadcast
KCET, “Artbound: The Watts Towers Arts Center” (ARTBOUND)
Judge’s comment: This documentary views one of the nation’s most wellknown social uprisings through the lens of art and artists. Wonderful collection of archival footage coupled with new, thoughtful interviews from informed voices.

News
KCET, “Arts Education” (ARTBOUND)
Judges’ comment: Broad historical perspective of diverse communities and voices, good variety of source narratives.

Hard News Feature — Over 5 Minutes
KCET, “Emory Douglas: The Black Panther Artist” (ARTBOUND)
Judges’ comment: An absorbing story about how Douglas's ground-breaking use of graphics for Black Panther messages resonates with political art ttoday.

KCET, “Dignidad Rebelde: Art is Protest” (ARTBOUND
Judges’ comment: In a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the production of posters for protest movements, as well as showing the use of posters at marches, KCET has produced an informative piece with outstanding cinematography and editing.

Soft News Feature — Over 5 Minutes
KCET, “Ellen Reid’s Griffith Park Soundscape” (ARTBOUND)
Judges’ comment: In a mesmerizing story about how music composer Ellen Reid develops a unique soundtrack and a sound app for park hikers in Los Angeles and other cities, KCET explores the connection between music and nature.

Personality Profile, Fine Arts
Yosuke Kitazawa, KCET, “We Are All Part of Many Worlds: Nobuko Miyamoto’s Barrier-Breaking Art and Activism” (ARTBOUND)
Judges’ comment: In this excellent personality profile, Kitazawa explores how an artist can work with his art while also being an active participant in social issues.

Film Feature
Christina Campodonico, KCET, “What 30-Year-Old Dance Work 'D-Man in the Waters' Can Teach Us About Coping with a Pandemic” (SOUTHLAND SESSIONS)
Judges’ comment: The best art resonates beyond its time and this is a wonderfully sourced and written example.

Other Fine Arts Feature
Carren Jao and Mia Nakaji Monnier, KCET, “In Plain Sight’: 80 Artists Take Over the Skies in Support of Immigrant Rights” (SOUTHLAND SESSIONS)
