Women attending the Barefoot College in Zanzibar are learning solar power engineering, bucking a tradition of gender roles and marginalization in the workforce. They come from villages across East Africa, where many homes are primarily powered by candles and paraffin lamps. The women are taking their training back to their villages to gain sustainable employment and bring light to homes.
