Derrick Shore Learns to Fly a Drone

It’s a look of awe, excitement and anxiety all at the same time. It’s the face you get the first time you fly a drone.

SoCal Connected reporter Derrick Shore wore it when he recently had his first hands-on tutorial from DJI, makers of popular consumer drones.

“I love people’s drone face,” said DJI’s Michael Shabun, after he handed Shore the drone remote mid-flight and noticed the signature stare. Shore played it safe on his first flight – lest he crash while the cameras were rolling.

Drone accidents are common and can have significant impacts.  Shore knows firsthand. He was one many who lost power at his home when a drone crashed into some power lines in West Hollywood in October 2015.

During his tutorial, Shore got a sense of how complicated flying and filming can be.

“It’s sort of like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time,” Shore said.
